What does 'rational' mean in dream interpretation?

In this context, a rational approach to dream interpretation means that we rule out psychic and intuitive methods of interpretation. Any interpretive claim ought to be supportable by a specific line of reasoning, which means providing evidence and arguing from known principles of interpretation.

While dreamWiki does not argue that shared dreams, precognitive dreams, dreams providing surprisingly accurate knowledge, and so on, never happen -- in fact, the evidence for shared dreaming is pretty good -- but that they are not the usual case.

We must understand normal dreams before we can endeavor to understand apparently paranormal dreams. Normal dreams are strange and paradoxical enough! -- and it's far more interesting to seek out logical solutions to paradoxical and strange puzzles, even if it is more work.
